The Addiction To Being Needed

The Addiction To Being Needed

What happens when people stop needing you?

Many of us enjoy helping.

We enjoy supporting.

We enjoy solving problems.

We enjoy being the person others can count on.

There is nothing wrong with that.

The challenge begins when our value becomes attached to being needed.

When that happens, we begin volunteering before being asked.

Fixing things that aren't ours.

Carrying responsibilities we were never assigned.

Feeling guilty when we rest.

Feeling uncomfortable when others become independent.

At some point, we must ask ourselves a difficult question:

Do I enjoy helping, or do I need to be needed?

The answer may reveal more than we expect.

Healthy relationships allow people to grow.

Unhealthy patterns require people to stay dependent.

Growth has taught me that support and control can sometimes look surprisingly similar.

One empowers.

The other attaches.

One builds confidence.

The other builds dependency.

The goal is not to stop helping.

The goal is to help from freedom rather than obligation.

Reflection Question

Where in your life have you confused being valuable with being needed?

Scripture

Galatians 6:5

"For each one should carry their own load."
