We Were Free Before We Knew It

How long were you free before you realized it? 

Not legally.

Not politically.

Not financially.

Personally.

Spiritually.

Emotionally.

How long did you possess something before you fully understood it belonged to you?

One of the things I love most about Juneteenth is that it reminds us that freedom and awareness do not always arrive on the same day.

The people who received the news on June 19, 1865 did not become free that morning.

They were already free.

The proclamation had already been issued.

The decision had already been made.

The legal reality already existed.

What arrived on Juneteenth was the awareness.

The announcement.

The revelation.

The understanding.

And honestly, I have realized that many of us experience personal freedom the same way.

There have been seasons of my life where I believed I was waiting for freedom.

Waiting for confidence.

Waiting for peace.

Waiting for clarity.

Waiting for permission.

Waiting for validation.

Waiting for someone to tell me I was ready.

But looking back, I realize something.

Many of the things I was waiting for had already been given.

I simply had not fully recognized them yet.

The confidence was growing before I could name it.

The wisdom was developing before I could trust it.

The faith was strengthening before I could see it.

The freedom was present before I understood it.

Yet every day I still had to keep moving.

I had to:

• keep showing up,
• keep learning,
• keep believing,
• keep praying,
• keep trusting,
• keep working,
• and keep walking.

Not because I knew exactly where I was going.

But because stopping would not have helped me arrive any sooner.

One of the greatest gifts of faith is understanding that God's work does not begin when we recognize it.

Many times, He is already moving.

Already preparing.

Already positioning.

Already teaching.

Already providing.

We simply have not caught up to what He is doing yet.

That realization has changed how I view both freedom and growth.

Because life will continue to happen.

Challenges will continue to come.

Relationships will continue to evolve.

Circumstances will continue to change.

But faith gives us the courage to keep moving forward even before we fully understand what God is building.

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is not only a historical event.

It is also a personal awakening.

A reminder that sometimes the announcement comes after the journey has already begun.

Sometimes the realization arrives after years of preparation.

And sometimes the most beautiful discovery is realizing that God had already started the work long before we recognized it.
