What Feels Loud to Others Feels Safe to Me
Share
I’ve been thinking about something that feels small—but isn’t.
I believe animal prints are neutral.
Not loud. Not extra. Not attention-seeking.
Neutral.
Animals were given patterns, colors, and textures for a reason. Their appearance allows them to survive—to exist within environments where they are both seen and unseen.
Camouflaged. Protected. Aware.
And when I wear animal prints, that’s what I feel.
Not flashy.
Not performative.
Safe.
As someone who thinks deeply and creates constantly, my mind is always moving.
There’s always something processing.
Something connecting.
Something forming.
And because of that, I’ve realized I don’t always need quiet to feel calm.
Sometimes I need environment.
Sometimes I need movement.
Sometimes I need something that meets me where I already am.
That’s what animal prints do for me.
They don’t overstimulate me—they settle me.
They feel like I’m blending in, even if others perceive me as standing out.
And I’ve noticed this same feeling in how I think about New York City.
To some, it’s overwhelming.
Too fast. Too loud. Too much.
But to me, it feels like ease.
Because there is always something happening.
Always somewhere to go.
Always something to experience.
There is no pressure to force stillness.
The environment carries movement for me.
And in that, I feel calm.
I’ve come to understand that safety doesn’t always look like silence.
Sometimes it looks like alignment.
Sometimes it looks like being surrounded by what naturally meets your pace.
What others may see as “too much,” I experience as “just enough.”
Even spiritually, I see this reflected.
In Ephesians 6:11, it says:
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand…”
Armor isn’t meant to draw attention—it’s meant to protect.
It’s meant to prepare you to move through your environment with awareness and covering.
And for me, I’ve realized that some of the things I wear, some of the environments I’m drawn to, even the way I think—
They function as a kind of covering.
Not to hide who I am.
But to allow me to move safely as who I am.
What looks bold on the outside isn’t always bold on the inside.
Sometimes it’s peace.
Sometimes it’s grounding.
Sometimes it’s protection.
